Weather can be described using terms such as wet or fine, warm or cold, windy or calm, so why is there a need to measure the weather? For most people, a description of the weather is adequate but for many businesses more detailed and accurate measurements are required. The science of studying weather is called meteorology. Weather scientists or meteorologists measure temperature, rainfall, pressure, humidity, sunshine and cloudiness and they make predictions and forecasts about what the weather will do in the future. This is important for giving people advance notice of severe weather such as floods and hurricanes. Temperature, or the hotness or coldness of a substance, is measured with a thermometer. A thermometer is usually made from a tube of hollow glass with a bulb shaped base.

These indexes are displaced by the expansion and contraction of the mercury, remaining at their extreme positions to give readings of the maximum and minimum temperatures. Its purpose is to record the maximum and minimum temperatures reached since the thermometer was last read. It is interesting to note that Six's maximum and minimum thermometers were still being used in of exactly the same design and construction as ones produced over years ago. A Six's thermometer is a thermometer invented by James Six, which is capable of measuring the maximum and minimum temperatures during a given time.
A Six's thermometer functions by using alcohol to expand or contract the mercury inside to display both the highest and lowest temperatures of a given time period. There are bulbs at the top of each arm of the tube, one above each indicator. The bulb above the minimum indicator tube typically contains alcohol while the bulb atop the maximum indicator tube contains a vacuum. Six's thermometers are an excellent way to record both the highest and lowest temperatures in a day without going outside and making note of the temperature repeatedly. Before each reading, the thermometer must be reset with iron indexes being moved back into position at each end of mercury section with the aid of a magnet. The minimum temperature is recorded from the left column of the tube while maximum temperature is recorded from the right column. The key difference between regular thermometers and Six's thermometers, besides the ability of the latter to record maximum and minimum temperatures together, is that in regular mercury thermometers it is the expansion of mercury which records the temperature.

Six's thermometer is a registering thermometer which can record the maximum and minimum temperatures reached over a period of time, for example 24 hours. It is used to record the extremes of temperature at a location, for instance in meteorology and horticulture. It was invented by a British scientist James Six , born in Canterbury, in ;  the same basic design remains in use. It is also commonly known as a maximum—minimum, minimum—maximum, maxima—minima or minima—maxima thermometer , of which it is the earliest practical design. The thermometer indicates the current temperature, and the highest and lowest temperatures since last reset.
A thermometer designed to record both the maximum and minimum temperatures that have occurred over a given time period. It usually consists of a graduated capillary tube at the base of which is a bulb containing ethanol. The capillary contains a thin thread of mercury with a steel index at each end. As the temperature rises the index is pushed up the tube, where it remains in position to show the maximum temperature reached; as the temperature falls the lower index is pushed down the tube and similarly remains in position at the lowest temperature. The indexes are reset by means of a permanent magnet.
