This introduction to Atomic and Molecular Physics explains how our present model of atoms and molecules has been developed over the last two centuries both by many experimental discoveries and, from the theoretical side, by the introduction of quantum physics to the adequate description of micro-particles. It illustrates the wave model of particles by many examples and shows the limits of classical description. The interaction of electromagnetic radiation with atoms and molecules and its potential for spectroscopy is outlined in more detail and in particular lasers as modern spectroscopic tools are discussed more thoroughly. Atomic, molecular, and optical physics AMO is the study of matter -matter and light -matter interactions; at the scale of one or a few atoms  and energy scales around several electron volts. AMO theory includes classical , semi-classical and quantum treatments. Typically, the theory and applications of emission , absorption , scattering of electromagnetic radiation light from excited atoms and molecules , analysis of spectroscopy, generation of lasers and masers , and the optical properties of matter in general, fall into these categories. Atomic physics is the subfield of AMO that studies atoms as an isolated system of electrons and an atomic nucleus , while molecular physics is the study of the physical properties of molecules.
