The linguistic focus of the project was the tense-aspect system, specifically the contrast between the Preterite and the Imperfect in Spanish given the challenges this poses for L2 learners. Six L1 English university students of L2 Spanish at intermediate level volunteered to participate in the study. The finding also reveal interesting insights into metalinguistic and strategic resources used by the participants to describe contrasts between the Preterite and Imperfect. The article concludes by discussing pedagogical and research implications regarding the alternative approach to L2 explicit grammar instruction considered in this study. Oxford: Blackwell, Like most of the research in L2 temporal semantics, this book focuses on the expression of past tense, which is characterized by a displacement of the event from the time of speaking and thus requires a marker of some sort.
My research interests fall primarily into two main categories; the development of tense-mood-aspect systems in second language and the development of second language discourse and pragmatics. In my early research these seemed to be two distinct tracks, the first grammatical and the second pragmatic. As I continue to work in these areas, however, I have become increasingly aware of how linguistic development interacts with development in interlanguage pragmatics, and how discourse structure particularly narrative structure influences tense-aspect use. My current work expands my research on tense-aspect to include the expression of the future and modality.
The field of second language acquisition SLA has grown significantly in recent years. Of the 20 plus journals in English concerned with topics of second and foreign language L2 learning, for example, nearly a third were established in the past 15 years. The vast majority of these journals are devoted to empirical research, providing a forum for SLA researchers to present their findings on the linguistic, cognitive, social, contextual, psychological, and neurobiological characteristics of L2 learning and processing.
