Crude oil is used to make the petroleum products we use to fuel airplanes, cars, and trucks; to heat homes; and to make products such as medicines and plastics.
PTTEP commits to operate the business conscientiously and responsibly towards society and environment through adhering to the Safety, Security, Health, and Environmental SSHE Policy, which includes the commitment to the environmental protection. Company personnel, business partners as well as contractors working for or on behalf of the company must implement this SSHE Policy. Not only all activities throughout the company project life cycle; mainly from the exploration, production and decommissioning phases, but supporting activities for example product transportation, waste management, other logistics activities and supply chain management are also covered by the SSHE Policy. The roadmap supports the mitigation of environmental impacts from our operations, lowering of our carbon and ecological footprints, as well as creation of value-added processes to our business. This roadmap supports the company commitment to deliver cleaner and more environmental-friendly petroleum exploration and production by introducing and implementing the various projects in each theme for example; greenhouse gas reduction projects, energy efficiency, green procurement, green logistics, and etc.
Geutebruck, E. A comprehensive overview of the status of the marine environment near the offshore facilities in the Southern Arabian Gulf, which was carried out for the Zakum Development Company ZADCO in , was obtained by a marine environmental survey. This involved a team of marine biologists, chemists, surveyors and computer technicians in a multi-pronged effort including analyses of seawater and sediment, benthic sampling of hard and soft bottom habitats, a study of the fouling organisms on oil platform structures, and fish surveys. Special emphasis was placed on in-situ multisample collection by scuba divers and detailed underwater observation and documentation with still and video cameras. Basic laboratory work was performed onboard the vessel during the survey of approximately 4 weeks. The field survey was followed by an extensive 9-month biological laboratory work. The chemical, biological and photographic approaches yielded a very consistent picture.
Petroleum has many uses, and the environmental impact of the petroleum industry is correspondingly extensive and expansive. Crude oil and natural gas are primary energy and raw material sources that enable numerous aspects of modern daily life and the world economy. Their supply has grown quickly over the last years to meet the demands of rapidly increasing human population , creativity, and consumerism. Substantial quantities of toxic and non-toxic waste are generated during the extraction , refinement , and transportation stages of oil and gas. Among all human activities, fossil-fuel extraction is the largest contributor to the ongoing buildup of carbon compounds in the earth's biosphere.
Zagi, M. Since the issuance of Environmental Guidelines and Standards for the Petroleum Industry in , over pre-development Environmental Impact Assessment and post-development Environmental Evaluation Studies have been carried out by Oil and Gas Operators. Thus, EIA has become a standard practice in environmental and project planning on some major exploration and project development activities. However, our experiences in Nigeria suggest that not much is achieved in terms of environmental management despite the increase in the number of EIA studies being carried out. The reason for this is not far fetched since it is universally accepted that EIA as a planning tool is saddled with so many weak points. Some of the major weak points associated with EIA in Nigeria include the sparsity of baseline information against which the environmental impacts are measured; lack of budgetary allocations from the operators to implement mitigative measures and monitoring plans; lack of human resources and political commitment to enforce the environmental management plan amongst others. Consequently, oil operators carried out EIA in Nigeria to a larger extent, to satisfy regulatory requirements for the obtention of environmental permits.
Reckless drilling can be devastating for the environment and local communities. Oil and gas drilling has serious consequences for our wildlands and communities. Drilling projects operate around the clock, disrupting wildlife, water sources, human health, recreation and other aspects of public lands that were set aside and held in trust for the American people. And the consequences could be devastating for the environment and local communities.
The industrialization of the deep sea is expanding worldwide. Increasing oil and gas exploration activities in the absence of sufficient baseline data in deep-sea ecosystems has made environmental management challenging. Here, we review the types of activities that are associated with global offshore oil and gas development in water depths over m, the typical impacts of these activities, some of the more extreme impacts of accidental oil and gas releases, and the current state of management in the major regions of offshore industrial activity including 18 exclusive economic zones. Discharges of water-based and low-toxicity oil-based drilling muds and produced water can extend over 2 km, while the ecological impacts at the population and community levels on the seafloor are most commonly on the order of — m from their source. These impacts may persist in the deep sea for many years and likely longer for its more fragile ecosystems, such as cold-water corals.
