Dependent Variable in Experiments

Independent vs Dependent Variables

The two main variables in an experiment are the independent and dependent variable. An independent variable is the variable that is changed or controlled in a scientific experiment to test the effects on the dependent variable. The dependent variable is 'dependent' on the independent variable. As the experimenter changes the independent variable , the effect on the dependent variable is observed and recorded. For example, a scientist wants to see if the brightness of light has any effect on a moth being attracted to the light.

Shalaby, College of Business Admiration. All Rights Reserved. This research is aimed to study the effect of Job Satisfaction and Organizational Citizenship on the Job performance of the External Auditor. Data was collected through questionnaires distributed to a random sample of workers in the Capital Companies, and Audit Offices in Jeddah and Riyadh, two major cities of Saudi Arabia. The study utilized descriptive analysis, simple correlation and Linear regression, as the statistical methodology to illustrate the relationships among variables.

The dependent variable is the variable that is being measured or tested in an experiment. For example, in a study looking at how tutoring impacts test scores, the dependent variable would be the participants' test scores, since that is what is being measured. In a psychology experiment , researchers are looking at how changes in the independent variable cause changes in the dependent variable. One way to help identify the dependent variable is to remember that it depends on the independent variable. When researchers make changes to the independent variable, they then measure any resulting changes to the dependent variable. As you are learning to identify the dependent variables in an experiment, it can be helpful to look at examples. Here are just a few examples of psychology research using dependent and independent variables.

Research is concerned with the systematic gathering of information. Its purpose is to help us in our search for the truth. Although we will never find ultimate truth in the context of research to know precisely about the reasons of any person or group would behave in any organization. The ongoing research adds to our OB knowledge by supporting some theories, contradicting others, and suggesting new theories to replace those that fail to gain support. Researchers have their own vocabulary for communicating among themselves and with outsiders.

Definition: A characteristic, number, or quantity that increases or decreases over time, or takes different values in different situations. Types of variable: There are three types of variables; Dependent variables Independent variables Contingency variables. Dependent variables The variable being measured as an outcome of the service learning experience is called dependent variables. It also called outcome, response, or explained variable. It also called control, explanatory, predictor, or manipulated variable. May be qualitative such as student gender, type of community organization, or type of college or quantitative e. Examples: Statement 1 Co-education leads to better performance of male and female students, if there would be no harassment at universities.

Independent vs Dependent Variables

Most studies of organizational performance define performance as a dependent variable and seek to identify variables that produce variations in performance. Researchers who study organizational performance in this way typically devote little attention to the complications of using such a formulation to characterize the causal structure of performance phenomena. These complications include the ways in which performance advantage is competitively unstable, the causal complexity surrounding performance, and the limitations of using data based on retrospective recall of informants. Since these complications are well-known and routinely taught, a pattern of acknowledging the difficulties but continuing the practice cannot be attributed exclusively to poor training, lack of intelligence, or low standards.

What Is the Difference Between Independent and Dependent Variables?
