Hypothesis Testing

In terms of selecting a statistical test, the most important question is "what is the main study hypothesis? For example, in a prevalence study there is no hypothesis to test, and the size of the study is determined by how accurately the investigator wants to determine the prevalence. If there is no hypothesis, then there is no statistical test. It is important to decide a priori which hypotheses are confirmatory that is, are testing some presupposed relationship , and which are exploratory are suggested by the data. No single study can support a whole series of hypotheses.

Statistical tests are mathematical tools for analyzing quantitative data generated in a research study. The multitude of statistical tests makes a researcher difficult to remember which statistical test to use in which condition. There are various points which one needs to ponder upon while choosing a statistical test. These include the type of study design which we discussed in the last issue , number of groups for comparison and type of data i. In the present article, we are going to discuss these points, but before that, let us go through some important concepts in statistics. They have different degrees of usefulness in statistical research. Ratio measurements have both a meaningful zero value and the distances between different measurements defined; they provide the greatest flexibility in statistical methods that can be used for analyzing the data.

Chapter 5 argued that substantial improvements in the cost-effectiveness of operational testing can be achieved by test planning and state-of-the-art statistical methods for test design. It was also noted that achieving the full benefit of improved test design requires a design that takes account of how test data are to be analyzed. This chapter focuses on how data from operational tests are analyzed and how results are reported to decision makers.

This page shows how to perform a number of statistical tests using SPSS. Each section gives a brief description of the aim of the statistical test, when it is used, an example showing the SPSS commands and SPSS often abbreviated output with a brief interpretation of the output. You can see the page Choosing the Correct Statistical Test for a table that shows an overview of when each test is appropriate to use. In deciding which test is appropriate to use, it is important to consider the type of variables that you have i. Most of the examples in this page will use a data file called hsb2, high school and beyond.

We used simulated data to evaluate properties of statistical testing methods to appended to the end of the executive summary and are discussed in the text. Tchebysheff's theorem can be used to identify the required sample size when the.

How do we test the independence of two categorical variables? It will be done using the Chi-square test of independence. As with all prior statistical tests we need to define null and alternative hypotheses.

This module will continue the discussion of hypothesis testing, where a specific statement or hypothesis is generated about a population parameter, and sample statistics are used to assess the likelihood that the hypothesis is true. The hypothesis is based on available information and the investigator's belief about the population parameters. The specific test considered here is called analysis of variance ANOVA and is a test of hypothesis that is appropriate to compare means of a continuous variable in two or more independent comparison groups. For example, in some clinical trials there are more than two comparison groups.
