Fourth Way

The Eleven Naqshbandi principles or the "rules or secrets of the Naqshbandi" , known in Persian as the kalimat-i qudsiya "sacred words" or "virtuous words" , [1] are a system of principles and guidelines used as spiritual exercises , [2] or to encourage certain preferred states of being, in the Naqshbandi Sufi order of Islamic mysticism. There were originally eight principles formulated by the Central Asian Sufi teacher Abdul Khaliq Gajadwani died , the last three of the eleven being added later by Baha-ud-Din Naqshband Bukhari — , founder of the Naqshbandi Order. These principles are designed to be borne in mind and used as spiritual practices or exercises in the Naqshbandi system of spiritual development.

This first collection of talks by the contemporary Sufi teacher Omar Ali-Shah was a milestone in Sufi literature, since for the first time a Sufi master was willing to openly share his "trade secrets" with his pupils, i. This collection extends the original version of this book, first published by Tractus in as a working textbook for the students of Omar Ali-Shah throughout the world. By adding about three-quaters of hitherto unpublished material, mostly concerned with the internalization and application of the rules, the book takes on a new and more general focus, and is possibly destined to become a classic of contemporary sufism. The rules themselves, eleven simply-expressed concepts which students of sufism were expected to work over and apply, were first drafted in the twelfth and fourteenth century by the Sufi Masters Abd al-Khaliq Ghujawani and Bahaudin Naqshband, who founded the order. Contemporary orientalists have generally relegated them to the category of interesting historical footnotes, but the genius of Omar Ali-Shah has been to dust off these shelved ideas and show us how relevant they are to our lives and inner thinking here and now. They are not secrets in the sense of inpenetrable mysteries, they are secrets because they refer to hidden or intimate aspects of ourselves which must be exercised to develop further. This collection by the contemporary Sufi teacher Omar Ali-Shah brings together a series of talks made to congresses of medical and healthcare professionals interested in adding a dimension of traditional knowledge to their own therapeutic disciplines.

The Fourth Way refers to a concept used by George Gurdjieff to describe an approach to self-development learned over years of travel in the East [1] that combined what he saw as three established traditional "ways," or "schools" into a fourth way. The term "The Fourth Way" was further developed by P. Ouspensky in his lectures and writings. Posthumously, Ouspensky's students published a book entitled Fourth Way , based on his lectures. According to this system, the chief difference between the three traditional schools, or ways, and the fourth way is that "they are permanent forms which have survived throughout history mostly unchanged, and are based on religion.

The Fourth Way [1] is an approach to self-development developed by George Gurdjieff over years of travel in the East c. It combines and harmonizes what he saw as three established traditional "ways" or "schools": those of the mind, the emotions, and the body, or of monks , fakirs , and yogis , respectively. The exact origins of some of Gurdjieff's teachings are unknown, but various sources have been suggested. The term "Fourth Way" was further used by his student P. Ouspensky in his lectures and writings. After Ouspensky's death, his students published a book entitled The Fourth Way based on his lectures.

He wrote a number of books on the subject, and was head of a large number of Sufi groups, particularly in Latin America , Europe and Canada. Omar Ali-Shah gained notoriety in , when he published, together with Robert Graves , a new translation of the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam. This translation quickly became controversial; Graves was attacked for trying to break the spell of famed passages in Edward FitzGerald 's Victorian translation, and L. Elwell-Sutton , an Orientalist at the University of Edinburgh , maintained that the manuscript used by Ali-Shah and Graves — which Ali-Shah claimed had been in his family for years — was a "clumsy forgery".
