Oxford: Oxford University Press We have included them because they were an inspiration during work over the last five years. How, or on what conditions, can the historian know the past? In considering this question, the first point to notice is that the past is never a given fact which he can apprehend empirically by perception. Ex hypothesi, the historian is not an eyewitness of the facts he desires to know. Nor does the historian fancy that he is ; he knows quite well that his only possible knowledge of the past is mediate or inferential or indirect, never empirical.

The reconstruction of the past has always been dependent on evidence from events of the past. This means that history cannot be written without evidence. The relationship between the historian and the evidence used in historical deconstruction is one of the major themes in history today. This essay seeks to explain why the evidence used in historical deconstruction owes its value to the interpreter of sources with three main points namely; it is the historian who pick the evidence, the historian interprets the evidence and it is the historian who organizes and present the evidence to his readers. First of all it is the historian who in studying about the past picks what is evidence and what is not. The facts are available to the historian in documents, inscriptions and so on, like fish on the fishmongers slab. For instance if one is writing about the role of the media in the struggle for independence in Ghana, that person might come across a number of newspapers reporting an incident such as the riots, the historian can decide to pick any newspaper of his choice to be used as evidence in his research.

Historians place the past in context using historical sources such as written documents, oral accounts, ecological markers, and material objects including art and artifacts. History also includes the academic discipline which uses narrative to describe, examine, question, and analyze a sequence of past events, and investigate the patterns of cause and effect that are related to them. They often debate which narrative best explains an event, as well as the significance of different causes and effects.

History as a discipline is not only useful in the academic arena but also to the field of intelligence. The study of history helps one discern what the story is, instead of what the problem is; it helps to determine the who, what, when, where, how and the why of a narrative. But at the same time, these lessons gathered from intelligence successes or failures do have restrictions. This paper argues on three epistemological limitations to the use of history as a learning tool.

Edward Hallett Carr's contribution to the study of Soviet history is widely regarded as highly distinguished. In all probability very few would argue against this assessment of his multi-volume history of Soviet Russia. For the majority of historians he pretty much got the story straight. However, for several years there was disagreement about his contribution to the analytical philosophy of history.

The word "historian" is a relatively unambiguous word. It means simply a man who tries to write history. But the word "history" is thoroughly ambiguous.

Drawn from a survey of the History Department You engage in cheap, anachronistic moralizing. You are sloppy with the chronology.
