Mediating Academic Language Learning Through Classroom Discourse

TDMs can be conceptualized as epistemic tools that can mediate classroom discussions. We describe the CDOP coding scheme and its associated matrix that allows observers to reliably characterize TDMs in 2-min time intervals over the course of a class period. We present the protocol, discuss how it differs from existing classroom observation protocols, and describe the process by which it was developed and validated.

For school-aged students who are learning ESL, the discourse of the classroom must simultaneously construct curriculum knowledge and be a site for second language development. This chapter focuses on academic language learning in the ESL school context, in particular on how language learning is mediated through classroom discourse. While linguistic, social, and sociocognitive traditions have interpreted the nature of interaction differently, it is seen in all of them as playing a major part in learning and language development. It argues that interactions should be examined both for their effectiveness in fostering language development and also for the impact these interactions have on how students view themselves. The chapter concludes with some implications for classroom practice, which suggest how teachers can orchestrate classroom discourse for academic language learning.

Finding libraries that hold this item It's accessible, comprehensive and generally a lovely, lovely book. One of the best books I've read for a long time. It is notable for clarity of expression, and distils material from a wide range of academic studies into a brew which should prove more than palatable for both teachers and teacher educators.

How is discourse a support for deeper student learning? Cazden suggests that how students talk to each other connects directly with their ability to use their minds well. She shares an exchange among fourth-grade students discussing a math problem. At first, they are unsure of what there is to discuss?? But with some prompting from their teacher, the students actively debate the different approaches to finding a solution. While not a how-to book, the text is instructive for those who want to shift from teacher-led discussions to true student-to-student discourse. She also asks the reader to reexamine whose talk is valued in the classroom and how a multicultural society can honor different types of discourse and different ways of using language.

DOI Students' responses to the teacher's directive speech act are often not in line with expectations becaused they do not pay attention to the social context, interactional context and individual agency. This research uses a qualitative description approach and theoretical approach to classroom discourse analysis Rymes. There is a variety of social distance familiarity , teacher's high social status, interaction formalities situation, and the dominance of affective and referential functions in teacher's directive speech acts. Teacher's directive speech acts bring predictable, unpredictable interactivity, and create new contexts. Teacher's directive speech acts can showability master in subject matter, the ability to delivery subject matter, and ability tointeraction.

Discourse and Education pp Cite as. Classroom discourse refers to contextualized or situated language use in classrooms as a specific interactional context that reflects cultural and social practices. Interest in classroom discourse analysis has grown with an enhanced understanding of the mediating role of talk in learning as a high-level mental activity see review by Green and Dixon. The interweaving between identity and the contextualized use of language in the classroom has been brought to our attention by poststructuralist and social constructivist researchers, who view classrooms as a social and cultural space where power politics and ideological conflicts are in constant interplay e.
