In 'The First and Last Freedom', the discussion ranges wide — on suffering, on fear, on gossip, on sex, among other topics — but continually returns to this core concept of freedom. Fear of any kind breeds illusion; it makes the mind dull, shallow. Where there is fear there is obviously no freedom, and without freedom there is no love at all.

In short paragraphs and under numerous sub-headings, this book deals with some of the most pressing and perennial human problems, such as anger, violence, sorrow, suffering, jealousy, envy, desire and depression. Krishnamurti explores and explains the causes of these problems and moves on to suggest that the solutions are not to be found outside ourselves. No guru, no cult, no religion, no theory, no dogma and no sect can provide us with the answers. We have to look within: know ourselves, and find freedom from fear, which is the root of all sufferings. It is in the mirror of relationships that the self is revealed. Individuals seeking solutions need to be in constant dialogue between the self and the other.

The present article looks at mind and consciousness from the perspective of the eminent Indian philosopher, Jiddu Krishnamurti. He believed in total awareness as being essential for a free mind. Human beings always learned from their past, and it was important that they looked inwards and freed themselves from self-perpetuated torment. It was also necessary that they avoided repression. The society in which we live should be organic, where, although individuals had no choice but to dwell in that society, it was one where the interests of the individual and society were the same. He also maintained that religion was always the result of past conditioning. A mind should be investigative and scientific.

Krishnamurti cuts away symbols and false associations in the search for pure truth and perfect freedom. Author: J. What is it that most of us are seeking? What is it that each one of us wants? Probably most of us are seeking some kind of happiness, some kind of peace; in a world that is ridden with turmoil, wars, contention, strife, we want a refuge where there can be some peace. I think that is what most of us want. So we pursue, go from one leader to another, from one religious organization to another, from one teacher to another.
