The modeling of inlet and exhaust systems of internal combustion engine is very important in order to evaluate the engine performance. This paper presents new pressure losses models which can be included in a one dimensional engine simulation code. In a first part, a CFD analysis is made in order to show the importance of the density in the modeling approach. Then, the CFD code is used, as a numerical test bench, for the pressure losses models development. These coefficients depend on the geometrical characteristics of the junction and an experimental validation is made with the use of a shock tube test bench.

The course covers a broad range of topics from basic thermodynamics and fluid dynamics principles to a detailed description on compressible gas dynamics and flow instability phenomena associated with turbocharging and gas exchange processes in Internal Combustion Engines ICE.

Complex gas exchange systems are characteristic to ICE. Power enhancing technologies like turbocharging will continue to play an important role in the future powertrain systems.

Thus, the ICE gas exchange systems are constituted from many components, piping systems with valves and flow regulators, junctions and bends leading to a very complex 3D, intermittent, and unsteady flow.

With advancements in computer-aided design, simulation of internal combustion engines has become a vital tool for product development and design innovation. The framework allows engine component blocks to be connected in a physically representative manner in the Simulink environment, reducing model build time. Each component block, derived from physical laws, interacts with other blocks according to block connection. Then, the gas dynamics model is validated with commercial engine simulation software by conducting a simple 1D flow simulation.
