Bad neighbours

New York: Vintage, Notes to p. Index to p. While Ben Gurion eventually faded from power, Hussein dominated Jordanian politics from —when, at the age of 18, he took the oath of office—to his death from cancer in Hussein was surrounded by violence all of his adult life, not least by those who felt that dialogue with Israel would achieve nothing. Shlaim mines a rich vein of archival material on his subject, notably records of a remarkable set of secret interviews that Hussein had with various Israeli officials, starting in and continuing to

The defeat in the Arab-Israeli war, the ambiguous armistice agreements that followed and the growing belief in the need for collective Arab actions that characterized the second critical turning point created the conditions for the third critical turning point, which was highlighted by the Arab-Israeli War. The Six-Day War, as it is also known, which involved Israel, Egypt, Syria and Jordan, brought many significant changes to the region and helped to sow the seeds for the next and fourth critical turning point. The war resulted from a combination of factors, including increased tensions between Israel, Egypt and Syria, and internal problems within the Jewish state, evidenced by the anxiety of elites, demographic conditions and economic strains. The key motives behind it are, however, still debated among historians. The war constituted another humiliating moment for Arab countries.

Avi Shlaim's thought and writing is always characterised by a fascination with conspiracy. Lion of Jordan may be read as a straightforward and lucid account of Hussein's life and times, but it is also a complex work that can be understood at different levels, not least of which is collusion between the king and the Israelis. Hussein ruled the kingdom of Jordan for nearly half a century, from until his death in He walked a tightrope, as if balancing radical Arabs and Palestinians, on the one hand, and quite different sorts of Israelis on the other. His first and always foremost purpose was to ensure the survival of Most users should sign in with their email address. If you originally registered with a username please use that to sign in.

He is one of Israel's New Historians , [1] a group of Israeli scholars who put forward critical interpretations of the history of Zionism and Israel. Shlaim was born to wealthy Jewish parents in Baghdad , Iraq. The family lived in a mansion with ten servants. His father was an importer of building materials with ties to the Iraqi leadership, including then-prime minister Nuri al-Said. The Iraqi Jews' situation became problematic with the Arab—Israeli War and the resulting persecution of the Jewish population by the Iraqi government. In , during Operation Ezra and Nehemiah , Shlaim's family, along with most Iraqi Jews, registered to emigrate to Israel and forfeit their Iraqi citizenship. A subsequent law ruled that all those who left forfeited all rights, including property rights.

The puzzle, which my paper addresses, concerns the following variation: why was the implementation in the s of the peace agreement in the Israeli—Palestine conflict much more problematic than in other conflicts such as South Africa and Northern Ireland? Great Powers, the Middle East and the Cold War

Fifty years ago, war broke out between Israel and its neighbours. The conflict lasted just six days but its effect would last to the present day. At the end of , Israel's Arab neighbours had invaded to try to destroy the new state, and failed.
