This paper presents an overview of the performance analysis methods available for the Smart Grid SG. Increased energy demand, volatile energy costs, uncertain power generation from the renewable energy resources RERs , electric vehicles, and environmental concerns are coming together to change the nature of the traditional power grid.

Electric networks are fed less and less by large, centrally planned fossil and nuclear power plants but more and more by millions of smaller, renewable and mostly weather-dependent generation units. A secure energy supply in such a sustainable and ecological system requires a completely different approach for planning, equipping and operating the electric power systems of the future, especially by using flexibility provisions of the network users according to the Smart Grid concept. The book brings together common themes beginning with Smart Grids and the characteristics of power plants based on renewable energy with highly efficient generation principles and storage capabilities.

Several IEC technical committees develop international standards relevant to smart energy and smart grids. The SyC helps to identify the appropriate standards and coordinates the work of the many technical committees involved in smart energy standardization. To reduce Co 2 emissions, the generation of electrical energy is increasingly reliant on renewable energy sources. In our increasingly smart cities, energy-efficient technologies are introduced to reduce our overall consumption as well as manage interactions with heat and gas. The transmission and distribution network is modernizing to accommodate higher demand as well as to become more energy efficient. Distributed energy sources DERs , situated close to where they are consumed, are complementing the conventional network and are being integrated into the electrical grid.

Each student must exclusively turn in own work. In particular, students are not allowed to ask anyone but instructor for help with their homeworks or programming assignments. However, they are free to discuss the topics and concepts of the course with their classmates, as long as they do not discuss the specifics of any assignment. Students are expected to make an honest, independent attempt to solve and turn in their answers to each homework question. Any violation of this policy could result in failure of the course. In order to solve the problem of the complete absence of knowledges on electrical power systems of some students, I am organizing, with the support of my collaborator Prof. Marco Maccioni, a tutoring activity.

Electrical grids vary in size from covering a single building through national grids which cover whole countries to transnational grids which can cross continents. Power stations connected to grids are often located near energy resources such as a source of fuel or to take advantage of renewable energy resources, and away from heavily-populated areas. A bulk-power transmission network is therefore used to move the power long distances, sometimes across international boundaries, until it reaches its wholesale customer usually the organisation that owns the local electric power distribution network.
