Open Access Policy. View My Stats. This research evaluated the process of conventional counseling techniques in one of the private higher educational institutions to improve its counseling services. This research also aimed at inviting more college students to submit themselves to the counseling process.

This study employed a qualitative case study design of Yin using 32 research participants as key informants: 30 counselees and two guidance counselors. The evaluation of conventional counseling is based on Pal's seven stages in the counseling process: readiness, reception, reconnaissance, examination, interpretation, application, and review.

Based on the findings, most of the students who entered the guidance office were not ready for the counseling process. However, the clienteles had a good impression of the counselors that leads to empowerment. A student who is not healthy, who suffers from an undetected vision or hearing deficit, or who is hungry, or who is impaired by drugs or alcohol, is not a student who will profit optimally from the educational process. Likewise, an individual who has not been provided assistance in the shaping of healthy attitudes, beliefs and habits early in life, will be more likely to suffer the consequences of reduced productivity in later years. School can be one of the primary sites through which children and youth learn about the factors that influence their health.

A Brief History of School Guidance and Counseling in the United States

The first school counselors in the United States emerged in the late s, the time of the Industrial Revolution. There have been traces of school counselors dating back to the late 16th century. An argument has been made that says that counseling and guidance principles began in ancient Greece and Rome with the philosophical teachings of Plato and Aristotle. Evidence suggests that techniques of modern-day counseling was practiced by Catholic priests in the Middle Ages. This relates to what a school counselor in high school and college would talk to students about today.

School counselors help to make learning a positive experience for every student. They are sensitive to individual differences. They know that a classroom environment that is good for one child is not necessarily good for another. Counselors facilitate communication among teachers, parents, administrators, and students to adapt the school's environment in the best interests of each individual student. They help individual students make the most of their school experiences and prepare them for the future.
