Graphic organizers are visual and graphic displays that organize ideas and demonstrate relationships between different information and concepts. They are designed to improve learning outcomes for students, review information, and are especially helpful to students who struggle with arranging information. There are many different forms of graphic organizers, each with its own unique way of organizing and displaying specific bits of information. The following examples are a sampling of different types that teachers utilize to help students better organize their thoughts, develop reading strategies, and become stronger writers. Decision Making Graphic Organizers Graphic organizers can be very useful in making a decision because they force the student to think about what the problem is, what the possible alternatives are, and what the consequences positive and negative of each alternative could be. Then the decision can be more easily analyzed. The graphic organizer guides the student through a four-stage decision-making process. The stages in the process are: State the decision that needs to be made. List possible alternatives. List the pros and cons the consequences associated with each of the alternatives. For example, this type of graphic organizer can be used to choose which elective courses would best suit a student.
Students will choose one of the ten areas of polymer science from the Macrogalleria web site. They will use the Macrogalleria web site to gather information to put into a graphic organizer. From the information on their graphic organizer the students will construct a Power Point presentation to report their findings to the class. Misconceptions: Students may not have an understanding of how polymers are used in our everyday lives. Students may be unaware of the complexities and varieties of polymeric materials and may think of "polymers' as "plastics".
