Look Inside. From the internationally heralded author of How Proust Can Change Your Life comes this remarkable new book that presents the wisdom of some of the greatest thinkers of the ages as advice for our day to day struggles. Solace for the broken heart can be found in the words of Schopenhauer. The ancient Greek Epicurus has the wisest, and most affordable, solution to cash flow problems. A remedy for impotence lies in Montaigne.

He was later sent to board and study at Harrow School , a public school in England. He has often described his childhood as that of a shy child living in boarding schools. De Botton read History at University of Cambridge , where he was a member of Gonville and Caius College , graduating with a double starred first. In The Consolations of Philosophy, de Botton attempts to demonstrate how the teachings of philosophers such as Epicurus , Montaigne , Nietzsche , Schopenhauer , Seneca , and Socrates can be applied to modern everyday woes. The book has been both praised and criticized for its therapeutic approach to philosophy. Shelves: philosophy , pop-phil , r-r-rs As I went through the book I was unable to make up my mind whether it was a work on philosophy masquerading as a self-help book to reach a wide audience or if it was a pretentious self-help book with aspirations to be a book on deep philosophy. Even after I finished it, I am not sure how to judge it.

First published by Hamish Hamilton in , subsequent publications onwards have been by Penguin Books. The title of the book is a reference to Boethius's magnum opus Consolation of Philosophy , in which philosophy appears as an allegorical figure to Boethius to console him in the year he was imprisoned, leading up to his impending execution. In Consolations , de Botton attempts to console the reader through everyday problems or at least help them to understand them by extensively quoting and interpreting a number of philosophers. These are categorised in a number of chapters with one philosopher used in each. The critical reception for Consolations has been primarily positive. Humphrey Carpenter in The Sunday Times , 2 April said, "The Consolations of Philosophy is certainly a commentary rather than a work of original thought; but few discussions on the great philosophers can have been so entertaining.

An introduction to some of the greatest thinkers including Socrates, Epicurus, Seneca, Montaigne, Schopenhauer, and Nietzsche. See my notes below or Amazon for details and reviews. Priority to be liked, rather than speak the truth. Laugh at modest jokes.

Book started off strong. I came to this book via de Botton's novels and How Proust Can Change Your Life, his previous effort at distilling a dense literary morass into something fresh and alive. The histories of these six philosophers were very interesting to me, so those alone would have made the book valuable, but even better were the ideas and consolations de Botton extrapolated from the works of these thinkers. Bleak yet consoling.
