Lisa extended the mug toward Rachel. Something inside her grew still and calm, and, for the first time, she understood what Gabe had been trying to say. Who could love a God so cruel and unfair.

The Bad Beginning by Lemony Snicket

At first it seems as if year-old Violet, year-old Klaus, and their baby sister, Sunny, have finally had a turn of good luck when they meet their newest guardian. Montgomery, or Uncle Monty as he prefers to be called, is a herpetologist.

One whole room in his house is filled with snakes of all kinds, including some very deadly specimens. But despite his slithery interests, Uncle Monty is a fun-loving and generous caretaker who treats the Baudelaire orphans with love, respect, and kindness. But as anyone who's read the first book in this series knows, good fortune won't stay long with the Baudelaires.

For starters Count Olaf returns, disguised in a manner that doesn't fool the kids for a minute -- though they can't seem to convince any adults. Then Uncle Monty dies supposedly after being bitten by one of his highly poisonous snakes although the kids are convinced he was murdered by Olaf.

And of course, Olaf and his sideshow cronies have dreamed up yet another plan to get their hands on the Baudelaire fortune. The plot has holes big enough to drive a truck through and more than a few contrivances come into play. Nonetheless, there is something irresistibly alluring about all the bad luck and mayhem that befalls these fast-thinking children, who use their inventiveness, book smarts, and bite-ability to survive.

Equally engaging is the mysterious narrator, Snicket, who taunts, tempts, and teases his way through the tale, revealing intriguing snippets of his own life and providing an ongoing lesson in the nuances of language. Book 2: The Reptile Room or Murder! The three unluckiest children in the world and their greedy relative, Count Olaf, return for another misfortunate adventure in The Reptile Room , the second book in Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events.

The Baudelaire children survived their first encounter with the dastardly and scheming Olaf, but the Count doesn't give up easily. Nor does the Baudelaire luck ever seem to improve. The treaty says that any wolf to be caught murdering a human would be put to death. The claws attached to them made clicking sounds. The wolves crept into the chapel, the sound of their breathing deep and rasping. Susan noticed a paved pathway that wound around from the front of the store, intersecting with this trail. There was a bicycle rack and a phone station at the junction point. He stopped and tried to sit down on the ground. The watery orbs registered surprise, and the mouths babbled even louder.

New booby traps were dreamed up, each seemingly more ingenious and unpredictable in its results than the last. Angered at their inability to fight back against the Stuka attacks, Captain Ilgachkin, a battalion commander, decided with one of his soldiers, Private Repa, to construct their own form of anti-aircraft gun. They fastened an anti-tank rifle to the spokes of a cartwheel which in turn was mounted on a tall stake driven into the ground. In any case their contraption achieved a certain success, with Repa managing to bring down three Stukas. He realized that until that moment he had had a certain contempt for Farnsworth, an unconscious assumption that he held office because of birth, not ability. It came to him with a jolt that it was far more probably a narrowness of experience. He was one of the vast numbers of people who cannot imagine themselves into the class or gender, least of all the emotions, of a different person. The smells of old cooking, effluent, and soot almost choked him.
